As work on the Grand Avenue Bridge continues… the pedestrian part’s going to be a little later opening than originally planned. CDOT says instead of opening to foot traffic tomorrow, flaws in some of the bridge railings being used will force a postponement to the first of April. Turns out some of those rails had to be sent back because they juset weren’t made right. While the pedestrian part of the bridge is being held up, the main project won’t be. It should remain on schedule the rest of this year into next.
Remember that winter weather advisory’s still in place, until midnight tonight. Total accumulations from this storm could get up near a foot, but likely more than 6 inches for sure. Be prepared for the usual traffic snarls by leaving earlier, driving more slowly, and allowing plenty of extra time to get to your destination. More details on the snow and the days after from Meteorologist Don Day in just a few moments.
Look for some wild people wearing a ton of purple, green and gold in Snowmass Village today. They’ll be celebrating Mardi Gras, heading toward the Easter season. Seems some 35 years ago, some New Orleans locals getting away from their town’s crazy atmosphere this time of year started it all, with a mellower, less intense celebration than they were used to back home. But of course it “evolved” over time, becoming pretty big in its own right, and now Fat Tuesday is a major event around here too. An estimated 15 hundred, maybe more, take part in several organized events each year. They include the “Mother of all Ascensions” uphill race this morning, that starts at 7 with snowshoes, telemark skis, whatever you think will get you up the ski area. It finishes with a special breakfast at Gwyn’s High Alpine. Other stuff happening today in Snowmass will be a big party at the Elk Camp restaurant from 11:30 til 3, music provided by our kind of wearers of purple, the 50 piece jazz band the Basalt Longhorns. There’s going to be face painting along the Snowmass Mall, a ski parade down Adams Avenue… a lot of bead tossing and we don’t know what you have to show to get ‘em… A Mardi Gras parade along the mall at 4:00 this afternoon, and fireworks over Fanny hill tonight at 7:30. So enjoy, have a happy Mardi Gras, and L’aissez les bon temps roulez!!
We have some more details for you about what’s happening this weekend with the other Basalt Longhorns, the high school variety, in Colorado’s Class 3A boys’ basketball tournament. Friday, down at the Denver School of Science & Technology in Green Valley Ranch, the Longhorns will face the University Bulldogs of Greeley Friday evening. Gametime has now been set, at 5:30. The ‘Horns have beaten the host DSST Raptors on that floor a month ago, and Friday Basalt goes in seeded Number 9, against University’s 24 seed. The winners face the winners between the 8th seed Raptors and Number 25 The Pinnacle Saturday, for the right to advance to next week’s Great 8 at the University of Denver. We’ll be there to bring you all the action the Longhorns have, beginning with pregame at 5:10 Friday, and again that tip is at 5:30, here on KSNO, The Mammoth!!
